Stabat Mater

Stabat Mater est un hymne catholique composé au treizième siècle, attribué au moine italien Jacopome da Todi (1230-1306) qui médite sur la souffrance de Marie lors de la crucifixion de Jésus-Christ. Le nom de la prière est une abréviation de Stabat mater dolorosa, son premier vers en latin, qui signfie «La Mère des douleurs se tenait debout». C'est un poème latin médiéval avec beaucoup de poésie ; les croyants et les artistes considèrent que c'est l'expression classique d'une nouvelle piété empathique et sentimentale qui a rapproché les chrétiens vers la Passion du Christ à travers le thème de la Mater Dolorosa.

Au XVème siècle, le Stabat Mater a été intégré dans l'office catholique.

Le Stabat Mater a été joué en pièce musicale par plusieurs compositeurs, parmi eux Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Joseph Haydn, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Antonio Vivaldi, Gioacchino Rossini, Antonín Dvo?ák, Krzysztof Penderecki et Karol Szymanowski. Stabat mater fut l'une des dernières compositions de Giuseppe Verdi, ses Quattro Pezzi Sacri ("Quatre Pièces Sacrées"), 1898.

Celui de Haydn, en sol mineur, est une grande oeuvre qui dure environ 1 heure, pour solistes, choeur et orchestre. Je me demande pourquoi elle est quasiment inconnue.

Il y en a autour de 540 (c'est rien à côté des Requiem : 5032 de 3119 compositeurs sur le site Requiem Survey : http://www.requiemsurvey.org/composers.php?id=295)

J'ignorais jusqu'à maintenant qu'à côté du tragique Stabat Mater Dolorosa il existe aussi un Stabat Mater Speciosa (attribué au même auteur : Jacopone di Todi).

Moins connu, le Stabat mater speciosa décrit les joies de Marie dans l'étable de Bethléem, d'après le récit évangélique. Pratiquement oublié dès la fin du xve siècle, le texte n'est redécouvert qu'à la moitié du xixe siècle par l'historien catholique français Antoine-Frédéric Ozanam (Poètes Franciscains en Italie au Treizième siècle).

Comparativement au Stabat Mater dolorosa, peu de compositeurs ont mis en musique le Stabat Mater speciosa ; on retiendra la composition de Franz Liszt, troisième mouvement de son oratorio Christus. Notons que cette pièce fait partie de la première partie (oratorio de Noël), tandis que l'on trouve le Stabat Mater dolorosa dans la troisième partie (oratorio de la Passion).

J'ignorais complètement l'existence de ce "Stabat mater speciosa" !! merci pour ces précisions.

C'est vrai qu'il n'a pas l'air mal. De ce que j'ai écouté d'Howells jusqu'à présent m'a toujours plu.

J'ai fait un point sur la liste ci dessus, il manquait les plus grands Stabat, dont Pergolese, Haydn, Rossini...  Je viens d'y ajouter Howells.

J'ai entendu hier soir la seconde partie du "Stabat Mater" de Rossini. J'ai trouvé cela très beau   , en fait, cet "hymne religieux médiéval" (tel qu'on le décrit), chez Rossini confine presque à une sorte de "mini-opéra religieux". Je ne sais pas pourquoi, j'avais quelques réticences devant des envolées très lyriques, malgré la perfection de l'exécution et la beauté de la composition. Peut-être parce qu'en ce moment, j'ai le désir de "Stabat Mater" plus austères.. !
Quand je lis la liste de Joachim, j'en ai le tournis !!! J'en connaîs quelques-uns, c'est tout ! J'en ai chanté deux ou trois....(dont celui de Krammel, il y a bien longtemps)... Il me revient la mémoire de celui de Mozart (fragmentaire je crois).
